Jovanović was born in Belgrade in 1924. He completed studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1949. He organised his first and second solo shows in the city of his birth in 1953 (the ASA –ULUS – Gallery and the Gallery of the Association of Graphic Artists). That same year he went to Paris where he lived and worked until his permanent move to New York in 1960. During the 1960s he continued to work intensively, but in the following decades his artistic activity stagnated. Since the 1980s he has been regularly coming to Belgrade, but organised his third solo exhibition only in 2006, in the Gallery of the Association of Graphic Artists. Jovanović is the recipient of the Stojan Ćelić Award under the auspices of the Zepter Museum and on that occasion another solo exhibition of his works was mounted in the Zepter Museum in 2016 and the first monograph study dedicated to his creative activity was published.
